DO make peace with your body before you hit the shops. Now is not the time to decide that you hate your body, your thighs are huge and your bum is too big. Get over it!

DON’T shop for a swimsuit with super-white winter skin. Apply a fake tan before you even thinking about going into the change-rooms. Why? A tan can reduce visual lumps and bumps by about 20 per cent. Gotta love that!

DO find a swimsuit you feel comfortable walking out of the dressing room in – even if it is to get a second opinion from the salesgirl or a girlfriend. If the thought of them seeing you freaks you out, imagine what it’s going to be like at the beach.

DON’T be afraid to try on a pile of swimsuits. The more cossies you try, the more chance you have of finding the perfect one.

DO keep an open mind. Even if you have your heart set on one specific style, be prepared to try on different styles. If you really want a bikini, try on a bandeau, it might just look hot!

DON’T buy fluoro colours. Even if you’ve heard that they make you look more tanned – forget it – it’s not true. You’ll just end up looking like you’re trapped in the ’80s.

DO try a white swimsuit. A white cossie can enhance the slightest hint of a tan. Just make sure the cossie you buy is double-lined with nude fabric (it gives more coverage than white.) And if you’re still not 100 per cent confident about the see-through factor, test it out in the shower before you head to the beach.

DON’T forget to double up. We’re still talking about linings. Check the thickness of the cossie before you buy it. A single-ply cossie can accentuate anything that you want to be kept out of sight.

DO try on a bigger size than your normal dress size. Swimsuit sizing is usually cut smaller. Giveaways that your cossie is too small? It bulges where the suit meets your skin, or you can’t lift your arms up with the bottoms creeping up. On the other hand, swimsuits can stretch, so don’t pick one that’s too big. It’s too big if it has a saggy bottom or the top droops.

DON’T even think about a swimsuit with a g-string bottom. There’s only a select few that can carry one off. Know what we mean?

DO choose a cossie top that fits as good as your bra. Check for a snug fit around your body as well as in the cups. If you have a large cup size, choose straps that are wider, thin straps offer little support and will dig into your shoulders. The cup material is important too. A swimsuit with supportive fabric keeps you lifted and alleviated pressure on your neck and shoulders.

DON’T even think about metallic fabrics unless you want to look bigger than you are. Light bounces off them, making you appear bigger.

DO mix and match. Most of us aren’t the same size on the top and bottom, so check out cossie ranges that offer seperates for you to choose from. you can not only mix your size, but the colour and style too.

DON’T hesitate to ask the sales assistant for help. Show hera not-quite-right cossie that you like, and ask for her advice on what would fit you better. Then send her to get more cossies in other styles and sizes. Less work for you – and you don’t have to keep getting dressed and undressed.

DO repeat, confidence is sexy. Nothing looks hotter than a girl who is comfortable in her cossie and has learned to love, not abuse her body.
